It is an opportunity for stakeholders across the sector to discuss emerging opportunities, address challenges, and reaffirm their commitment to building a resilient and sustainable tourism industry. His Excellency’s Address on Tourism & Economic Growth

The World Tourism Day celebrations in Mbale City were graced by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who attended as the Guest of Honour. In his keynote address, the President highlighted the immense economic significance of the tourism sector and its potential to drive national development.

“Tourism is bigger than coffee 22 times.”
— H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda

This powerful statement emphasized the substantial value that tourism contributes to Uganda’s economy and reinforced the need to continue investing in the industry’s growth and sustainability. The President’s remarks served as a reminder that tourism extends far beyond leisure and recreation. It creates jobs, generates foreign exchange earnings, supports local businesses, promotes cultural heritage, and stimulates infrastructure development.

From tour operators and accommodation facilities to transport providers, artisans, guides, and local communities, countless livelihoods depend on a thriving tourism sector.

Digital Agenda & Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism

The celebrations were held under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” a timely and forward-looking call that recognizes the growing influence of technology in transforming how destinations are marketed, managed, and experienced. Across the globe, digital solutions and artificial intelligence are revolutionising the tourism landscape by making travel planning easier, enhancing customer experiences, improving business efficiency, and expanding access to information for travellers.

For tourism businesses, the digital era presents unprecedented opportunities to connect with visitors from around the world. From online booking platforms and virtual destination showcases to AI-powered customer support and personalised travel recommendations, technology continues to redefine the way travellers discover and experience destinations. As Uganda positions itself as a premier tourism destination, embracing these innovations will be critical in increasing competitiveness, visibility, and accessibility.

As a company committed to delivering exceptional travel experiences, Zazu Africa Safaris recognises the importance of embracing digital transformation. The integration of technology into tourism services not only improves operational efficiency but also helps travellers make informed decisions and enjoy seamless travel experiences. The future of tourism lies in balancing authentic human experiences with innovative technological solutions, and we remain committed to being part of that journey.

Wetland Protection & Environmental Stewardship

In addition to highlighting tourism’s economic importance, President Museveni called for urgent action to protect Uganda’s mild climate and fragile ecosystems. He encouraged communities to move away from activities that degrade wetlands and instead embrace fish farming (aquaculture) as a sustainable alternative source of livelihood. This message underscored the critical relationship between environmental stewardship and long-term economic prosperity.

At Zazu Africa Safaris, we strongly echo this call to safeguard nature’s delicate balance. Protecting wetlands while promoting innovative livelihoods such as aquaculture ensures that Uganda’s breathtaking landscapes, wildlife habitats, water systems, and cultural heritage remain intact for generations to come. Sustainable tourism can only flourish where natural resources are preserved and communities are empowered to benefit from conservation efforts.

Wetlands play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. They regulate water flow, support biodiversity, mitigate flooding, and contribute to climate resilience. Their protection is therefore not only an environmental responsibility but also an economic necessity. Many of Uganda’s tourism attractions depend on healthy ecosystems, and preserving these natural assets is essential for the continued growth of the sector.

The message of conservation aligns closely with the values and mission of Zazu Africa Safaris. We believe that tourism should serve as a force for positive change by creating economic opportunities while encouraging responsible environmental practices. Through sustainable tourism initiatives, travellers gain the opportunity to appreciate Uganda’s natural beauty while contributing to conservation and community development.

Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO) Leadership

Participation under AUTO further demonstrated the importance of collaboration within the tourism sector. By bringing together tour operators, conservationists, and government partners, AUTO continues to play a crucial role in advocating for the growth, professionalism, and sustainability of Uganda’s tourism industry. Zazu Africa Safaris is proud to be part of this collective effort to promote Uganda’s tourism offering both locally and internationally.

The World Tourism Day celebrations provided a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to engage in discussions about tourism development, conservation, investment, innovation, and destination marketing. Through exhibitions, networking sessions, cultural performances, and knowledge-sharing engagements, participants explored strategies for strengthening Uganda’s position as a leading tourism destination on the African continent.

Highlighting Eastern Uganda & Mount Elgon Attractions

The celebrations also showcased the extraordinary tourism potential of Eastern Uganda. Mbale City, nestled at the foot of Mount Elgon, provided an ideal setting for the event. The region is renowned for its spectacular scenery, rich cultural diversity, agricultural heritage, and unique adventure tourism experiences. It serves as a gateway to some of Uganda’s most remarkable attractions and continues to attract visitors seeking authentic and immersive travel experiences.

Among the region’s notable tourism attractions is Mount Elgon National Park, home to one of Africa’s largest volcanic calderas and an array of unique flora and fauna. Visitors to the region can enjoy mountain hiking, cave exploration, birdwatching, cultural encounters, and community-based tourism experiences that showcase the traditions and hospitality of local communities. These attractions represent just a fraction of the tourism opportunities available in Eastern Uganda.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Sustainable Safaris

As the tourism landscape evolves, partnerships between government institutions, private sector players, conservation organisations, and local communities will become increasingly important. Sustainable growth can only be achieved through collaboration that balances economic development with environmental conservation and cultural preservation.

The theme of digital transformation and artificial intelligence also reinforces the need for the tourism industry to remain adaptive and innovative. Emerging technologies provide new opportunities to showcase destinations, gather insights about visitor preferences, improve customer service, and enhance destination management. By embracing these tools responsibly, tourism businesses can become more resilient and better equipped to meet the needs of modern travellers.

For Zazu Africa Safaris, participation in the World Tourism Day celebrations reflects our unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable tourism, supporting conservation initiatives, embracing innovation, and creating meaningful travel experiences. We remain dedicated to showcasing the best of Uganda and Africa while contributing to the responsible development of the tourism sector.

We extend our sincere gratitude to AUTO, the organisers, government agencies, tourism stakeholders, development partners, and the people of Mbale City for making the World Tourism Day celebrations a memorable success. Their collective efforts continue to strengthen Uganda’s tourism industry and reinforce its position as one of Africa’s most attractive destinations.

As we look to the future, we are inspired by the opportunities that lie ahead. Through innovation, environmental stewardship, community empowerment, and strategic collaboration, Uganda’s tourism sector can continue to grow while preserving the natural and cultural treasures that make our country unique.

At Zazu Africa Safaris, we believe tourism flourishes where nature is protected, communities are empowered, and innovation is embraced.
